A richly detailed and atmospheric novel that vividly captures the constraints and tensions of the 1930s through the following decades. The imagery throughout was so strong, and Eva is a deeply likeable and sympathetic central character, while several of the surrounding characters are wonderfully frustrating and even unlikeable in ways that make the story even more engaging. A thoughtful exploration of family, identity, love and societal expectations, with emotional depth that lingers long after finishing.
